Pasta with Striped Pink Eggplant, Cherry Tomatoes, Pine Nuts, Cilantro Pesto and Purslane

September 14, 2013

Eggplants come in a variety of shapes and colours. The dark purple or black is the most widely available eggplant but there are pink, white and even striped varieties. Have you used the striped pink eggplants before? I believe it is called Listada di Gandia. There is some controversy about its origin. Some say it came from Spain, others say from France. Regardless, it is mostly considered now an Italian variety. I guess the Italianos claimed it... View Article

Late Summer Roasted Carrots and Pomegranate Salad with Orange-Cumin Dressing

September 5, 2013

Pomegranates in the stores means that fall is on its way. I am excited about the change of season and the new fruits and vegetables it brings to the markets but of course I am sad to see the summer coming to an end. Spring, summer and fall seem to be so short here in Canada and the winter sooo looong. Early fall is an interesting season, where summer merges into fall. We still get... View Article

Tartine with Ricotta, Heirloom Tomatoes and Parsley Pesto

September 4, 2013

I like simple foods but the food needs to taste good and look pretty. Tartines lend themselves to all these requirements: they are simple to prepare, flavourful and look so beautiful. Tartine is a perfect lunch. You can add a bowl of soup or pair it with a salad for lunch or serve it by itself as a lunch, light dinner or even a snack. I love tartines so much that I have a special... View Article

Avocado, Grapefruit and Endive Salad with Micro Greens

August 29, 2013

Here is a simple and refreshing salad with nice textures and flavours. I found the beautiful avocados in one of the stores and had to get them. Since they perish rather quickly, I had to use them in a few dishes right away. A couple of them will be posted. The salad combines the sweet and tangy grapefruit, creamy avocado and slightly bitter endive. A grapefruit vinaigrette pulls everything together nicely. I meant to... View Article

Fig and Brie Crisp Bread

August 28, 2013

I am still on a bit of a roll with pizza on the grill and this crisp bread is just another form of pizza shaped into a rectangle and cut crosswise to serve with a glass of vino. This crisp bread ended up on the boat and enjoyed on a sunset sail (minus the wine, we don’t drink and sail:) on the beautiful Okanagan lake. It was just the two of us on the boat... View Article

Grilled potatoes with Parsley-Lemon Pesto

August 27, 2013

Earlier this season I planted a little flat leaf parsley seedling on the patio and somehow, in no time it grew into a huge plant with beautiful flat leaves packed with flavour. Who knew these herbs can grow like that? In Calgary I could barely make it survive. Now I have several herbs in the rooftop garden and can step outside at any time to pick fresh rosemary, thyme, sage, basil (green and purple, sorrel,... View Article

Grilled Pizza with Mission Hill Heirloom Tomato Jam and Mozzarella Fior di Latte

August 20, 2013

I was up at the Mission Hill Winery store a while ago and bought one of their chef’s heirloom tomato jam in a jar. I finally got around to opening the jar and liked the sweet and tangy, honeyed flavour. I can think of a few ways to use it but today it is going to top a quick pizza I am making on the grill in my outdoor kitchen. I didn’t make the dough... View Article

Lemony Blueberry Pancakes with Walnuts, Maple Syrup and Whipped Cream

August 18, 2013

This morning I made breakfast for three. At first I was going to run out and pick up fresh croissants and serve them with scrambled eggs but then we have been eating out so much lately that I thought a better breakfast was in order. In no time at all a pot of oatmeal was  slowly cooking on the stove but you know how it is, at the last minute I decided to treat my... View Article

Grilled Peaches and Cream

August 17, 2013

If you asked my family what dish is the essence of summer in Kelowna they are sure to say “Peaches and Cream”. Ripe, juicy Okanagan peaches peeled and sliced into wedges, simply drizzled with the incomparable Blackwell cream (don’t ask about the fat content of the cream, I won’t admit it) and maybe a light sprinkling of sugar and we are in summer culinary heaven. Right now I have a flat of peaches I purchased... View Article

Roasted Corn with Ancho-Chili Butter in an Outdoor Kitchen

August 15, 2013

Ever since we bought our rooftop abode in Kelowna a couple of years ago we have been talking about having an outdoor kitchen installed on the north side of the patio. I like to cook and thought it would be nice to have an additional kitchen outdoors that would be handy for entertaining, perhaps informal cooking classes for friends, food photography or just for us to have fun with it. Roasted corn with ancho-chili butter... View Article

Broccoli Salad

August 8, 2013

Broccoli salads were not part of my cooking repertoire until recently. I don’t know why I never made them before. Maybe it is because of  the mushy broccoli salads on buffet tables, I have seen too many of those. Once I started making them though I cannot seem to stop. Broccoli can make a beautiful crunchy salad that is full of flavour and family and friends seem to enjoy it. There are never any leftovers.... View Article

Lentil Salad with Beets, Apricots, Goat Cheese and Walnut-Balsamic Vinaigrette

August 5, 2013

During the summer I make many vegetarian salad dinners and because most people are so concerned about having a visible protein as part of every meal (I am not) I add a legume salad to appease the uninitiated (and also because I love legumes:). Lentils are wonderful legumes that pair well with many vegetables and dressings and are very easy to cook. For salads I prefer the smaller lentils, preferably the du Puy variety, because...
