Kale and Feta Buttermilk Fritters

November 21, 2013

Fritters recipes usually get a lot of clicks on the blog. What does that say about us I wonder. We seem to like fried food. These little fritters are very easy to make and I only brush the pan with oil so they don’t stick. They are not fried in oil like you would normally expect fritters to be. You can serve them with sour cream, lemon butter, salsa or other toppings. They fit into... View Article

White Chocolate and Blackberries Scones

November 7, 2013

Now that the weather has cooled down I started baking a little more. It’s nice to have something homemade available with a hot cup of coffee in the morning or offer to a friend who happens to drop by. Scones are not a uniform concept. They can be round, triangular, even square, large or small, taller or flat, sweet or savoury, cake-like or crumbly, made with flour or oatmeal and include raisin, currants, berries or... Sweet Potato Orange Waffles with Orange Cinnamon Sauce

October 5, 2013

Fall mornings are a fabulous thing. Who invented them? Morning hot chocolate on the patio is ever more enticing as we watch the fog lifts slowly off the lake to reveal the beautiful silver blue of early morning. Although we know it is coming, fall seems to arrive suddenly. One morning it’s summer, the next morning it’s fall. “Don’t remember summer even saying goodbye” says David Mitchel in Cloud Atlas. Suddenly the days are shorter and... View Article

Oeuffs en Cocotte: Baked Eggs with Mushrooms and Goat Cheese

September 20, 2013

One of the most luxurious experiences is a leisurely breakfast and we have made quite a ritual of it at home or wherever in the world we are. Good food, beautiful table setting, freshly squeezed juice, a steaming cup of coffee, this is my idea of luxury. It doesn’t happen everyday, but I do make a point of carrying out this ritual now and then, creating moments to remember for my family, friends and myself.... View Article

Lemony Blueberry Pancakes with Walnuts, Maple Syrup and Whipped Cream

August 18, 2013

This morning I made breakfast for three. At first I was going to run out and pick up fresh croissants and serve them with scrambled eggs but then we have been eating out so much lately that I thought a better breakfast was in order. In no time at all a pot of oatmeal was  slowly cooking on the stove but you know how it is, at the last minute I decided to treat my... View Article

Breakfast Farro with Apples and Blackberry Syrup

July 18, 2013

Farro is an ancient grain that came into vogue a few years ago and is now readily available in grocery and specialty stores. It is known by many names and there is some culinary controversy over this but who really cares? it is basically a nice nutty chewy grain that cooks quickly and beautifully and can be used in many dishes. Since it is a grain I cook it for breakfast occasionally and serve it... View Article

Blueberry Buttermilk Muffins

September 11, 2012

I mentioned that with the abundance of blueberries in the markets I have been cooking with them a lot lately. Blueberry muffins are one of our favourites and I make these often so I thought I’d share the recipe today. These muffins are a please-everybody muffins, large and fluffy and made with eggs and dairy but I also have another way of making them, fat free vegan style that is also very good. Maybe I... Potato Cakes with Smoked salmon

September 11, 2012

I made these potato cakes as part of a breakfast selection when I had non-vegetarian friends visiting, hence the smoked salmon. If I remember correctly I poached a few eggs and offered them along with this dish. The potato cakes can be made in advance and reheated at breakfast. I made them as little cakes but they can also be made thinner and larger, pancake-like (see image below). When grating potatoes I prefer to use... View Article

Vegan Oat Waffles with Peach Sauce

August 26, 2012

I never liked the word vegan when it comes to nutrition . Vegan refers to animal-product-free foods, but it doesn’t mean anything in terms of health. Coke and potato chips are vegan, if you get my (borrowed from Dr. McDougall) point. I won’t go into a plant based food sermon here but may in the future. In the meantime, here is a waffles recipe made without eggs, butter or oil and served with fresh peach... View Article

Blueberry Buttermilk Pancakes

August 24, 2012

Blueberries are plump and sweet right now and it’s hard not to buy them by the caseload. Some of them made it into a few jars of jam, some into simple desserts (Blueberry Buckle, to be posted) and a few get incorporated into breakfast foods, whether on top of cereal or, as in this recipe, inside and on top of pancakes. I make these lovely breakfast treats in regular size or in mini form. For... View Article

Corn Buttermilk Muffins

August 20, 2012

My friend Dori mentioned that she wanted to make corn muffins and that of course triggered in me immediately the desire to make corn muffins, especially with all the fresh corn on the market now. I make several different types of muffins and usually adapt one recipe to make something else with it. This time I thought I’d make something new and settled on corn-buttermilk muffins. The slight tang from the buttermilk would balance the... View Article

Apricot Jam

August 12, 2012

The apricots are so gorgeous right now I have to use them as much as I can. I made apricot tarts with some, and the remaining ripe apricots on my counter made it into the lovely little jam you see in the picture. I don’t make large quantities of jam for long term storage. I make enough for only a few jars to keep in the fridge for immediate consumption or give away to friends.... View Article
