Dessert for Two: Apricot or Plum Crisp

August 26, 2013

Are you cooking for for one or two people? I often hear people say that they only cook for 2 so they “can’t be bothered” making this or that. We still need to eat so we make dinner  but I think dessert falls into the “can’t be bothered” category most often. One of the ways to escape the “‘why bother” syndrome is to have a few dishes in your repertoire that are easy to prepare,... View Article

Potato and Leek Pizza with Rosemary and Creme Fraiche

July 16, 2013

What? Potatoes and pizza? I am in. I have had a few potato pizzas here and there, the most memorable one at the exquisite Crazyweed in Canmore a while back. At Crazyweed they call theirs Bella Pizza and it has pesto, rosemary-crusted potatoes, mushrooms, charred onion and parmesan. It’s not the most common combination for pizza topping but a delicious and satisfying one just the same. If you are a foodie you look for new... View Article

Chilled Fresh Pea Soup with Mint

July 8, 2013

As promised I am posting the recipes for the food we prepared for the Dîner en Blanc event in Kelowna July 4th. We chose a cold menu that was easy to transport and remained fresh and beautiful over the course of the evening. First course was a chilled fresh pea soup with mint and a drizzle of cream. I didn’t add the cream earlier because the emerald green colour of the soup was so beautiful... View Article

Dîner en Blanc

July 5, 2013

Dîner en Blanc, Kelowna, July 4, 2013 After much anticipation (not excluding a few “do I really need to do this” moments) the day has arrived. Dîner en Blanc dream-like picnic in Kelowna was happening tonight. The event was conceived almost accidentally by a French (who else) aristocrat entertaining his friends at the Bois de Boulogne forest-like park in the 16th arrondissement in Paris. This popular park is a destination for many Parisians and guests... View Article

Shredded Cabbage with Lemon Vinaigrette

July 5, 2013

Simple yet delicious crisp salad made of shredded cabbage, chopped parsley and vinaigrette. As far as I am concerned simple is often the best, in almost everything. Instead of the usual coleslaw with mayo, why not try something light and refreshing? Toasted pumpkin seeds or chopped peanuts also enhance this salad. Of course you can elaborate, add red cabbage, shredded carrots, thinly slice onion, even apple.  Go ahead, make my day. No, just kidding, I won’t... View Article

The aftermath – 30 Days

November 12, 2012

November 2012 More than a month passed since the tragic event that destroyed our home and possessions. I learned a lot during this time. I learned that although I am strong there are limits to what I can bear by myself.  I truly needed my family and friends to get me through the heartache brought by this event. I always thought of myself as independent and self sufficient, a person who can get through anything... View Article

Lentil-Peach Salad with Lime-Agave Dressing

October 2, 2012

Last year while visiting the Mayan Riviera we had dinner at the famed Hartwood restaurant in Tulum. The restaurant became famous after Bon Apetit magazine did an article about the chef-owner and his wife (from NYC) and since then the line-ups to go into this no-reservation policy restaurant have been increasing as I believe have the prices. I was motivated to write a review of our experience at the restaurant and you can find it here... View Article

Pizza with Nectarines, Brie and Creme Fraiche

September 28, 2012

If you follow this blog you probably know that I make a lot of pizzas. I do have some favourites (Roasted Peppers with Goat Cheese is one) but I also have new surprises every week. I get my inspiration from what is in the market, in my fridge or on my kitchen counter.  This week I had a bunch of beautiful nectarines hanging around wondering what’s to become of them. Some made it into a... View Article

Avocado Fritters – Four Ways

September 18, 2012

On a recent trip to the Mayan Riviera I had a fried avocado salad at one of the large hotels on the beach. It was quite special and I made it a few times since I got home. Today I had a couple of beautiful, ripe yet firm avocados and I thought I’d make these lovely fritters and serve them as tacos in corn tortillas for a quick lunch. I have also stuffed them into... Kelowna for Foodies

August 14, 2012

I have been vacationing in Kelowna for the past several years and have a few places I like to go to for food and food related shopping. Cooking vegetarian means I judge places by the selection and condition of their produce, not by what they stock on their shelves (canned and bottled products etc.).  I’d like to share my list with you in case you are a newcomer to that lovely area and need some... Mango-Cilantro-Mint Salsa

August 11, 2012

It doesn’t always have to be tomato salsa. Here is a lovely mango salsa to add to your cooking repertoire that will brighten up the flavour of many foods. Salsa is generally associated with Mexican food (love it) but don’t limit its use to just tacos. Serve this as a condiment along with other foods, as a dip with endive spears or tortilla chips, spoon some over a salad or top a grilled baguette slice... View Article
